What is Hydrosol?

Hydrosols go by many names: herbal distillates, floral waters, blended flower water, hydrosols, hydrolates, herbal waters, or essential/aromatic waters. Hydrosols are aqueous products of hydrodistillation. Most of the time it is produced by distilling plants, leaves, fruit, stems, flowers or other organic material creating a vibrant smell in combination with water. Although similar to other essential oils, aromatic water is much less concentrated.

Hydrosols offer many skin care and other emotional uplifting benefits. The aromatic properties make great air fresheners, perfumes, deodorants, facial toners, and aromatherapy sprays. Hydrosols can be around 30 times stronger than herbal teas but much less potent than essential oils. Hydrosols can be used around babies and pets because of their gentle yet effective qualities. They are great replacements for sprays or toxic chemicals used in many bath and body products. Hydrosols are even a fabulous natural cleaner for home use. They have anti-fungal properties and can be used in a foot soak or during tub time. Plants have different spiritual meanings such as grounding, clearing, or protection qualities. Hydrosols are just another way of connecting to plants through water, instead of fire like burning incense.

Selkie Botanicals uses a copper alembic still that was handmade in Spain. Copper is a natural antimicrobial, meaning it has both anti-fungal and anti-microbial properties. Selkie Botanicals offers a full line of wild-crafted, organic hydrosols with bold ingredients rooted in the Pacific Northwest. From Lemon Balm to Eucalyptus, and Douglas Fir to Cedar, we are sure you'll find a great blend that suits your mood for any occasion during any season! Our hydrosols are crafted with love from locally grown ingredients and distilled by Shelby in her home garden.
